A Comparison of Student Outcomes in a Music Course Via Two Instructional Modes

The purpose of this project was to determine if traditional class standards/outcomes could be maintained while delivering the instruction via an Internet based instructional protocol. The instructional formats included the traditional on-campus and on-line delivery. Participants were 123 undergraduate non-music education majors. The course content consisted of the elements of music (rhythm, melody, harmony, and form). Course content and syllabi were the same for both formats. Effectiveness was measured using a pre/posttest format. All students received a pretest prior to the start of instruction and the same instrument was used as a posttest following instruction. Results indicated a significant difference in Pretest scores between the two groups with students in the online delivery method scoring higher than students in the traditional on-campus delivery method. There was no significant difference on the posttest scores between the two groups. Results of this project support other findings and the underlying premise of this study that students can achieve a similar level of exit performance regardless of method of instruction.
