Online Versus On-Campus Strategic Management Course: A Case Study
Studies have compared and found similar student success for online versus on-campus introductory business courses. This paper extends these studies by comparing student success in an online versus on-campus strategic management course, which is traditionally the capstone undergraduate business course.
The customary strategy topics were covered in the on-campus section via traditional class lectures, exams, case discussions, and the Capsim simulation, a leading strategy simulation game. The online class lectures were presented by way of recorded media and online presentations. Case analyses were implemented via the WebCT discussion board and an online version of the simulation Capsim was used. Although the overall student success was similar for both modes of delivery, differences were noted in the various constituent parts comprising overall student success. The online students scored better in case discussions while on-campus students scored better in the simulation exercise. These results are important to faculty who are developing multi-dimensional online courses.
